Peafowls, the combined name for peacock and peahen, are known for their vibrant and striking plumage. Most of us have heard the story that they do not mate as other birds do. That is the reason why Lord Krishna adorned the feather of Peacock on his head. However, this is a myth. Peafowls do mate, and it is a fascinating process to observe.

The Mating Process

The breeding season for peafowls is from March to June. During this time, the male peacock displays his feathers to attract the female peahen. Once the female is attracted, the male peacock will start to dance around her, spreading his feathers in a fan-like shape. This is called the courtship display. If the female is impressed, she will mate with the male.

Observing Peafowl Mating

Observing peafowl mating is a rare and fascinating experience. It is not easy to witness this event as peafowls are shy and prefer to mate in private. However, if you are lucky enough to observe this event, it is a sight to behold.

In June 2019, I was blessed to observe peafowl mating from a close distance. I was surprised to see a young and amateur male following the peahen. He was surprised and showed his anxiety in observing the mating from a much closer distance than me. In fact, he passed hardly one foot from the mating pair and chased the peahen after the mating was over as if she had committed some crime or betrayed him.
